Stanley Gibbons – Two Penny Blue

The Penny Black was the world’s first postage stamp, marking a revolutionary step in communication. Its launch was an instant success, sparking a surge in letter writing & public engagement with the postal system. Heavier letters or those sent over longer distances required more than a penny for postage, these cost two pence. That need brought about the introduction of the Two Pence Blue, affectionately known as the “tuppenny blue.” Significantly rarer than the Penny Black, only around 1.6 million Two Pence Blues were printed compared to 68 million Penny Blacks.
