Österreichische Post AG issued the world’s first blockchain stamp on 11 June 2019. For the first time, a seemingly traditional product – the postage stamp – manages to harness the highly complex technology of the blockchain.
According to the Austrian Post AG, this corresponds to the tariff for a letter of category L for the EU and rest of Europe with the dimensions: max. Format L 353 mm × W 250 mm × H 30 mm, weight max. 2kg.
The design of the extraordinary Stamp with the iridescent unicorn motif in rainbow colors (note: the unicorn is the heraldic animal of the ETH community) and the QR code for scanning the digital counterpart came from Julia Obermüller and was produced by Variuscard Productions in combination with screen and offset printing.

June 25, 2020 – Doge – Panda – Lama – Honey Badge
Begining on May 20, 2020, at 12:50(UTC+1) the Austrian Post AG launched the presale of the second edition of its highly sought after cryptophilately collectors item, the Crypto stamp 2.0.
The new edition has a limited edition of 240,000 copies. These will be divided into 4 equal parts of 60,000 pieces, with either a honey badger, a llama, a panda or a doge as motif.
The online shop of Austrian Post has collapsed due to the huge rush. All stamps were sold out within a very short period of time. The most popular motif was apparently the doge.
The delivery date of the stamps started on 25 June. From that day on, the stamps will be available at Österreichische Post AG’s retail outlets at a price of € 7.00, while stocks last, of course.

The theme of this exclusive edition was the hunt for the golden unicorn. Limited to 999 pieces, the Special Edition of the Crypto stamp 2.0 has made history: The stamp adorns a 1-gram gold bar and features a nomi-nal value of 500 euros. That is a world record! June 21, 2021 – CS 3.0 – The Whale
The “Crypto Stamp 3.0” was created as a non-fungible token (NFT) on the blockchain and comes up with additional features. An integrated NFC chip verifies authenticity and opens a URL on the smartphone that displays the state of the scanned stamp. The current Crypto Stamp was issued in the form of a plastic card in credit card format.
In addition to access to the virtual collection, owners also receive a real, wet-glue stamp with a face value of 9.90 euros for franking.
Those who own large amounts of crypto assets are known as „Whales“ in the scene. While marine mammals are threatened with extinction, the number of Whales is continuously increasing. These really „big fish“ are referred to as such because their decisions make high waves in crypto markets.

With a 1 gram of gold bullion, a nominal value of 500 euros, and a limited run of 999 stamps, this special edition was also a huge hit. 99 stamps could be won by means of a Crypto Quiz. A unique stamp with 20 grams of gold bullion went to the winner of a contest asking for ideas on the future of the Crypto stamp.
