2.5 euro coin Belgium 2024 “James Ensor” BU in a coincard

In homage to James Ensor (1860 – 1949), who died 75 years ago, the year 2024 has been declared “James Ensor Year”! To celebrate the great Belgian master, avant-garde artist, colorist, realist, symbolist, “artist’s artist”, innovator, inspiration, seeker of light, internationally renowned modern artist, a real festival was launched in his city birth of Ostend in December 2023. With several exhibitions at Mu.ZEE and activities dedicated to Ensor, his creations and his inspiration, Ostend passes the baton to Brussels. Brussels also has a lot to offer in terms of exhibitions at KBR and Bozar. You can also participate in the National Expo and create your own work inspired by Ensor. In autumn, it’s Antwerp’s turn. With exhibitions at KMSKA, which has the largest Ensor collection in the world, as well as four other Antwerp museums and numerous activities.

A versatile and idiosyncratic artist, James Ensor has a very vast body of work. Drawings and engravings, still lifes or landscapes, life-size works with masquerades, skeletons and caricatures. And everything in between. A source of inspiration for many artists after him.

A special artist deserves a special extra!
The James Ensor Year prompted the Royal Mint of Belgium to issue a 2½ euro coin depicting two of his most famous works. The 2½ euro coin is struck in BU quality and comes in the form of a coincard in two language versions. In honor of this special occasion, a free NFT* has been added to the coincard, a first for a Belgian coin! Quickly see which Ensor work comes to life for you and enjoy both the piece and the exclusive digital supplement!
The obverse of the coin shows in the background the two central characters of the impressive “Intrigue”. Above, on the left, in relief, the famous “Self-portrait with a flowered hat”; at the bottom, Ensor’s signature and the reference to the James Ensor Year.

The supplement, the NFT*, was added to the coincard with this coin. View the step-by-step plan in the special flyer or online and claim your NFT.

There are five different NFTs in as many degrees of rarity. Ensor’s works come to life with a “glitch” or thrill!
